Why Sudoku Puzzles Have Become So Popular
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

You have heard all the hype, seen it on TV, advertised in big name magazines and seen your friends scratching away at them every free moment they have. What are they? Where did they come from? What's all the hype? Well, they are sudoku puzzles and they are popular because they can be done anywhere, anytime by anyone, young or old. They help pass time in the doctor's office or keep kids busy on a road trip. Sudoku puzzles can even be done by the whole family.

Sudoku puzzles originated in Japan in the 18th century, but have just recently become popular in the United States. The word sudoku literally means "the number that is single.” Sudoku puzzles are 9x9 grids with 3x3 areas that are broken down kind of like a crossword puzzle. In those areas, there are boxes that already numbers in them. These numbers cannot be altered or moved. In the rest of the area, you have to fill in the numbers 1-9 without duplicating the number in each row, column or area. It may sound complicated, but once you get the hang of it, you can hardly bring yourself to put a sudoku puzzle down.

The great thing about sudoku puzzles is that you don't need to be a math whiz to play. Patience, time and concentration are all that is required. With millions upon millions of combinations that can be correct, there is no right or wrong answer. What your coworker gets can be completely different from what you get on the same sudoku puzzle.

Sudoku puzzles are the new hype. Most stores carry sudoku puzzle books, or you can go online to a number of websites to print one out. Just be prepared to get hooked when you try the first one. If you do like it, turn it into family fun once a week and see the result of the family time that the sudoku can give you.

Sudoku, is a Japanese, fun puzzle game. It requires the player to fill in the 9x9 square grid with the numbers one to nine. The numbers should be arranged in such a way that each row, column and mini-grid contains one of each number. A single error in a Sudoku throws the whole game out.

Reader Otter points out in his journal a very neat use for the logic contained in Debian's package dependency resolver: solving sudoku puzzles. To me at least, this is much more interesting than the sudoku puzzles themselves. Update: 08/24 02:51 GMT by T : Hackaday just ran a story that might tickle the same parts of your brain on a game played entirely with MySQL database queries. Read ...

It was bound to happen, someone figured out how to cheat at Wii Fit. In the August 2008 edition of Game Pro magazine there is an article entitled “Wii Fat: How To Win At Wii Fit Without Breaking a Sweat.” I on the other hand do not have to cheat at exercise…I just don’t do it.
